Have you ever wondered if a narcissist has a radar for an empath or nice person like you? It sure can feel that way. A friend (who is 34) recently told me she was raised by a narcissistic mother and has had a series of narcissistic boyfriends since. What is this all about? Why is there such a toxic dance when it comes to a narcissist?
It’s important to look at, first, the characteristics of both a narcissist and an empath. Narcissists thrive off high control and low empathy. They are entitled, egotistical, and manipulative, among other characteristics. They are takers, not givers. When a narcissist meets an empath, they think, “I’ve hit the jackpot!” And that’s exactly what they have done.
The empath is their winning ticket because an empath thrives off serving others. Some empaths live to help other people. Add a narcissist, who thinks everyone exists to serve them, to the equation and there’s a big problem. See the connection?
What this looks like in a relationship between an empath and a narcissist is that the narcissist calls the shots. This person often dictates what will be done and how. Activities, family gatherings, vacations, financial decisions, and even medical decisions are based on what the narcissist says needs to happen. And it almost always benefits the narcissist.
The empath begins feeling like something is off and that maybe it’s the empaths fault. If you find yourself asking these questions, you could be entering into a relationship with a narcissist.
• “My best traits are being used against me.” (“Does that mean I’m not as nice as I think I am?”)
• “Am I being gaslit?” The narcissist becomes the master of creating confusion about what is wisest and best.
• “Am I being pulled into a defensive posture?” Constantly feeling that the narcissist is on the prowl.
